Welcome to ERG Arts Studio
Sculpture. Sculpture is something people do for different reasons. To be honest, I had never in my life taken a sculpture course and during these three weeks of school I have experienced something new and incredible in my opinion. I couldn’t imagine myself sitting in Mr. Gamache’s room with my hands full of clay and the materials on my left, trying to do something. But this year, I felt this year was my opportunity to give it try. I thought about how cool it should be to make whatever inspires me out of clay, in a genre of representation, so I took the course. So far, I am actually impressed of how fast I have learned. Until now, I have made three or four objects that are not so bad for me, but it’s incredible how the all reveal the mood I was in while making them. I want to present a piece of artwork that not only reveals my techniques, but also my life. For me, the most relevant sculpture I have done so far is a happy sun.
Deciding on what I was going to make was easy. I just looked up in google a cool sun made out of clay and saw the artists intentions. I did not copy from an artwork, but I instead used my motivation, imagination, and inspiration. Planning for my sculpture was just practice and preparation. With the same piece of clay, I tried to make it a few times, and when I finally prepared myself I focused with my original piece. In this point, I had improved my skills in sculpting, so it was obvious how my growth made it easier for me.
It was a process to make this sun because making all the little triangles of the same size and smoothing them carefully was not an easy task, but we have to embrace challenges. In the picture on the right you can see how the sun has a smile and is blinking an eye. I was in a mood of happiness, joy, and freedom. First of all, I began by making the most perfect circle I could make with clay. Secondly, I smoothed it with a sponge for the center to be perfect to make the face and the corners for all the triangles. With the clay knife i did the smile, eyes, nose, and all corners. Afterwards I carefully took away all the extra clay that was on the outside for the corners to be perfect. Finally, I smoothed all corners as well this is what I got. The purpose of making this happy sun was to demonstrate my happiness being a sculptor and how I am thankful for the life I live.
In conclusion, making this art piece was a challenge for me because I am new in this sculpting world, but so far I am enjoying it. The last step to complete the sun was lifting it from the table and drying it out for it to be hard. This is a piece of living life to the fullest, something I can go back to when I am feeling down and will probably make me happy. The sun symbolizes light, day, and brightness, while the happy face symbolizes hope and matureness. I want to keep improving to see what is the most amazing piece I can make at the end of the year. For this to happen, I need to keep focusing in class, giving full attention and trying my best.
More than a happy sun
