Artist Statement
Sculpture is key for inspiration. There are different genres people are into, me for example, enjoy making realist, representational or modern sculptures. I don't just do it for marking the arts course in High School, I take sculpture because it's something I like. It's beauty and thinking is something that if you dont believe it you cannot see it. In all my pieces if you think and try to figure out what it represents you might reveal the reason I like making objects out of clay so much. The sculpture might just be an elephant for example, but the person who did it could be thinking in nature, something they want to see in person, or even their favorite animal. Taking a piece of clay and trying to sculpt something is very easy, but enjoying and inspiring yourself while doing it is not. A good sculptor puts a meaning into his artwork.
When you want to begin something with clay you need a plan. You need to think on something that represents you or the life you are currently living for it to be meaningful, personal, and important to you. If you just begin playing with clay you will probably never get something done correctly or you will not inspire as much. You can draw on a paper and sketch the steps, how are you beginning. Afterwards, I normally begin making my piece and do about two rough drafts until I think I can handle making my final one. With the thoughts and sketches I make before beginning to sculpt it gets easier for me because I already know exactly what I want to make and how to make it.
Afterwards, it's a process making the piece smoother, more beautiful, and final touches. I usually use the clay knife to give small touches and the wet sponge to smoothen the clay. You need to use all materials wisely when making your piece and have patience. When I am doing a sculpture with a base that will be holding it, I need to go step by step because if not, the base will not hold the at piece on top. For example, when I made the spider, I had to do the legs first and let them dry out a bit, for me to me able to make the body afterwards.
When speaking about making or inventing things I can be very creative. I have a big imagination since I am always thinking about new and innovative ideas. When I am going to begin a sculpture it usually takes me some time because I think too much about what I am going to be doing and trying to make it more unique and creative. To finish my sculptor I always like to give it a nice final smoothing for it to dry out clean and beautiful. Sculpting is more beautiful than you think, you just have to make an effort to see it.
